![]() Jabberwacky can tell jokes, swear, and has slang terminology integrated into its vocabulary.Īs with its predecessors, Jabberwacky is capable of passing the Turing test. Rollo Carpenter created Jabberwacky in 1988 with the goal of emulating a natural human conversation, with the additional components of humour and entertainment. Interestingly, ELIZA and PERRY were able to communicate with one another on a few occasions, as they were connected through ARPANET (the Advanced Research Projects Agency Network). PARRY was also able to pass the Turing test. PARRY’s communications were so natural that only 48% of psychiatrists were able to differentiate PARRY from a human, based on its responses. PARRY was a modified version of ELIZA, but was known for its attitude, as it was designed to imitate the behaviour of a paranoid schizophrenic. The next chatbot was developed by psychiatrist Kenneth Colby in 1972 at Stanford University. This chatbot was able to pass the Turing test, which tests a machine’s level of intelligent behaviour to determine if its capabilities are equivalent to or indistinguishable from a human’s. ELIZA was the first natural language processing computer program and paved the way for the evolution of chatbots.ĮLIZA’s communications were defined by answering very simple decision tree questions in a way that mimicked a Rogerian psychotherapist. In 1966, within the Artificial Intelligence Laboratory at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Joseph Weizenbaum created ELIZA. Here is an inside look at how chatbots have evolved throughout history. However, chatbots are not new technology by any means - they date all the way back to the 1960s. On a daily basis, many individuals rely on Siri to answer their burning questions, Alexa to play the song they cannot get out of their head, and website-integrated chatbots to assist with their problems or purchase enquiries. The current Chatbot Revolution continues to grow rapidly with advances in computer and AI technologies.
